General electric is a multinational technology company based in America. It was founded in the year 1878 by Thomas Edison. It has its set up in Fairfield Connecticut.  General electric is the world’s tenth biggest technology company.

In 1896, General Electric was one of the original 12 companies listed on the newly-formed Dow Jones Industrial Average and still remains after 112 years (it is the only one of the original companies remaining on the Dow— though it has not continuous In 1911 the National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) was absorbed into General Electric’s existing lighting business. GE then established its lighting division headquarters at Nela Park in East Cleveland, Ohio. Nela Park was the world’s first industrial park, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and is still the headquarters for GE’s lighting business.

GE founded the “Radio Corporation of America” also called RCA. General Electric had been the eight huge computer companies in the 1960’s with IBM, the largest was “Snow White” preceded by the “Honeywell”, “Seven Dwarfs”, “RCA”, “NCR”, “Burroughs”, “UNIVAC” “Control Data Corporation” and General electric. It had a wide range of special purpose and general purpose computers. Amongst them were the, GE 400, GE 600 and GE 200 series, and the Data net switching computer. A 600 Data net computer had been designed, but was never sold.

It is known that general electric got into manufacturing of computers because they were the leading users of computers apart from the United States. In the year 1970 General Electric put its computer for sale to Honeywell. In the year 1986 General Electric recaptured RCA, only for the ‘NBC TV network’. The remaining was put for sale to many other companies that included Thomson SA and Bertelsmann. In the year 2002 “Norwest Venture Partners” and “Francisco Partners” recaptured a part of GE called ‘General Electric Information Systems’ also called ‘GEIS’. GXS is the top provider of B2B Commerce. General Electric has minor ownership place in GXS.
